I guess they dont realize that while they might live in a partial vacumm, economic black clouds will eventually effect them reducing demand and pricing on their their black gold for which their economy is over reliant on.

Iran celebrates global meltdown
10 October 2008

Amidst the financial wreckage around the world, one government is celebrating.

Watching the global gnashing of teeth, the Islamic Republic of Iran is enjoying the ride.

"We are very happy that America's economy is in jeopardy and they are paying the price for their misdeeds. God is punishing them."

That is the verdict from Ayatollah Jannati, one of the most senior clerics in Iran.

President Ahmadinejad has pronounced on the collapse of global capitalism, and announced that Iranians should stand ready to manage the world.

And for the moment, Iran does seem to be above the fray.

Shares on the Tehran stock exchange, while down slightly in recent trading, have increased in value by 20% during the year. In fact, to walk the floor of the Tehran Bourse, you could be excused for thinking you are in a parallel universe.

I would Iranian figures, not Iran are celebrating. That's a small but important distinction.

The reality is that they will plug along just fine. Irrespective of the price of oil they will be fine. The fact that they have been blocked out of most trades channels to the west has actually worked to cocoon them against the knock on effects of what we are seeing over here. They're not immune but they are in a strong spot.

For a nation that relies upon others to refine its own oil, and whose economy is greatly
based upon its oil producing revenue. The Iranian leaders sure do view global economics
in a strange kind of way. If oil prices continue to drop (as they normally do in a recession)
then other countries will have less of a "need" for Iran.

Interesting because I just heard this afternoon a ABC radio news report that some Iranian official or cleric announced it was very worried about its revenues....as they should be. They do not have a strong economy even with high oil prices and thats all they have to offer.

or less impetus to do something to to Iran in order to make it easier and less costly to get iranian oil. When oil prices are high, everyone goes nuts on the people producing it. when it is low, people dont really 'care' too much and pay the price.

Idiots. All they are trying to do is put a "shock-factor" into whatever they say. Calling Israel a corpse, wipeing them off the face of the Earth, etc. Like all short-man syndrone nations, they talk a bunch of smack. ...even if it will actualy affect them eventually!

I cannot understand it when the media refers to one opinion as the whole country's and not just the leading figures. It must be insulting to some people.

I'm wondering how their embrace of the Euro is affecting them now that the dollar is regaining strength.
